Planning and preparation

What is a short course?

Short courses are courses or sessions lasting one or more days which are intended mainly for non-ETH specialists. Talks and short courses lasting less than a day, and courses mainly intended for students, are not short courses as defined here.

Checklists

Have you thought of everything? Use the Downloadchecklists for short courses (DOCX, 52 KB) (in German) to make sure you haven’t forgotten anything.

1. Concept and mission

A professorship develops the concept for a short course (objectives, title, content, target group, instructors etc.) and sets parameters such as location, dates, times, room needs, implementation type (face-to-face, online, blended learning, flipped classroom, hybrid). It tasks a staff member or an events manager with organising the course. Here see also the DownloadGeneral terms and conditions for short courses (in German) (PDF, 70 KB).

2. Room and facilities

Important points to consider when selecting rooms are technical and didactic facilities, arrival routes and the availability of food and accommodation.

Do not publish the course until you have received a room reservation confirmation from the Room and Course Scheduling Office. During the semester very few rooms are available for block courses.

Reservation

If you have an ETH login, use the room reservation application. Otherwise, send a request to the Room and Course Scheduling Office with the following details: sponsorship, event description, dates, number of persons anticipated, course type, location and size of rooms, desired infrastructure.

3. Catering, accommodation, transport, supporting programme

Depending on the course concept, drinks, coffee breaks, meals, accommodation and transfer to hotels need organisation. Please note that these are subject to value added tax (see below). A tip to avoid being taxed double: Have the participants pay the respective provider for these services directly.

Find out about special ETH rates for travel, car rental, hotels and restaurants. The external pageZurich Tourism website offers hotels in all price categories and general tourist information for Zurich.

For information on catering at ETH Zurich see the Gastronomy web site. Please note that bookings in the Dozentenfoyer and other cafeterias must be made at an early stage.

4. Course publication

We will publish your short course on the website of the School for Continuing education and the website of external pageSwiss University Continuing Education– Swissuni.
